About the Bundibugyo Strain

Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) is one of six known Ebolavirus species, distinct from the more familiar Zaire strain. It was first identified in 2007 in Bundibugyo District, western Uganda.

  • 2007 Uganda outbreak: 131 cases, 42 deaths (~32% case fatality rate)
  • No approved vaccine — rVSV-ZEBOV does not protect against BDBV
  • No approved therapeutic — supportive care only
  • Symptoms: fever, generalized body pain, weakness, vomiting; bleeding in some cases; rapid deterioration

WHO Response

  • Mobilized epidemiologists, infection-prevention specialists, lab and clinical experts
  • Airlifted 5 metric tonnes of supplies (including PPE) to Bunia
  • Declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 17 May 2026
